Protecting Your Child’s Vision

As a parent, it is your responsibility to be sure that you are caring for the health of your child’s eyes. Early eye examinations are important to help the child grow and develop, especially since vision is an integral part of the learning process. Even if you don’t suspect that your child has a vision problem, it is still important to schedule regular eye examples with a pediatric eye doctor.

Sometimes, there are symptoms present that might indicate that your child is experiencing vision problems. For example, you might notice that your child squints when they are looking at something far away. Or you might observe your child hold a book or paper close to their face when they are reading. Watch for these signs, and talk with an experienced pediatric optometrist if you suspect that your child might be having vision problems.

Scheduling Regular Eye Exams

Additionally, it is also a good idea to schedule regular eye exams for your child. Even if the child doesn’t wear glasses and their vision seems to be fine, it is possible for an eye disease to be present. Identifying these problems in the early stages is one of the best ways to protect your child’s health. Early diagnosis makes it possible to reduce the risk of long-term visual damage, especially when you maintain good contact with an experienced pediatric eye doctor.

The first eye exam should happen when the child is young, and these exams should be maintained every 1 – 2 years, depending on the recommendation of your pediatric eye doctor. If your child has a higher risk for a certain type of eye disease, then the doctor might recommend frequent eye exams to identify the progression of the disease.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that the first eye exam should be at the age of 6 months. The next appointment should be at age 3, and another appointment should happen before the child starts school (usually around the age of 5 or 6). Then, eye exams should be maintained every two years, unless the child is wearing glasses or has another eye condition that needs to be monitored.

Choosing a Pediatric Optometrist

When you are scheduling an appointment for your child, keep in mind that there are benefits to scheduling an appointment for pediatric eye exams instead of a going to a general doctor. Working with a pediatric optometrist means your child will recieved care from a professional with specific experience of eye conditions that are common in childhood. At Village Eyecare, we have the experience you are searching for!
